Although Steel Axes are expensive to make, consuming Iron and Coal to produce the steel required, they can be useful to get woods that you don't often get with other axes.
Steel axes are the second most durable axe, with the most durable material in the game being Pursteel. It's advised to never craft Pursteel Axes, as the material cost is far greater than the material output even with the durability boost.
